Symptomatic Breast Unit
The Symptomatic Breast Unit in Galway is based on site at University Hospital Galway. We are one of the 8 designated breast cancer centres in Ireland. Our Breast Unit is designed to provide a one-stop centre of high quality care to our patients in the West.
To support this our staff include:
- Consultant Breast Surgeons
- Consultant Radiologists
- Advance Nurse Practitioners
- Clinical Nurse Specialists
- Experienced Nursing Staff
- Experienced Mammography Radiographers
- Business Manager
- Data Manager
- Experienced Administrators
We also have close working relationships with Consultant Pathologists, Consultant Medical Oncologists and Consultant Radiation Oncologists and meet weekly at multi-disciplinary team meetings (MDM) to discuss patients, their care plans and progress.
We work closely with our colleagues in the National Cancer Control Programme (NCCP) to provide standardised high quality care to our patients providing them with access to the service as outlined by national Key Performance Indicators (KPIs).
How to Access the Service
To access the unit a patient must get a referral from their General Practitioner (GP). The referrals are then triaged by a Consultant Breast Surgeon and assigned the priority of Urgent or Routine.
Opening Hours: Our Breast Unit is open from Monday to Friday from 8.30am to 4pm.
Clinics take place until lunchtime.

Directions: The Symptomatic Breast Unit is located just inside the hospital grounds when entering the campus from the Browne Roundabout at the back of the hospital grounds. We advise patients to use the Eircode H91YR4R and use the entrance beside the ramp.
