Rapid Access Prostate Clinics

Rapid Access Prostate Clinics were set up by the National Cancer Control Programme (NCCP) so that patients up to 70 years of age could be seen, diagnosed quickly and start their treatment as soon as possible.

Our Rapid Access Prostate Clinic in Galway opened in 2009.  We organise rapid assessment for our patients.  Our unit is now the busiest prostate unit in Ireland.

You may be referred to us by your GP depending on your symptoms.  Our main aim is to see you within 20 days of receiving a referral from your GP.

You will meet one of our specialists who will assess you and arrange a biopsy for you if you need one.  You might need to bring somebody with you in case you need to have a biopsy on the same day.  We will arrange any other tests you may need and discuss a follow up plan with you.

We have a prostate cancer multi-disciplinary team meeting (MDM) every other Wednesday.  The MDM team includes specialist experts from Urology, Specialist Nursing, Medical and Radiation Oncology, Radiology and Pathology.

They will discuss your case and recommend a treatment plan for you.  We will invite you back to our Prostate Clinic to discuss this treatment plan.  If prostate cancer is confirmed this may include surgery, radiotherapy, active surveillance or drug treatment or just watching with follow up clinics.

We realise this can be a difficult time for men and their families.  Our team is here to support you throughout your journey.
