GUH’s participation in Medtech Pulse Galway

Professor Derek O’Keeffe, Consultant Endocrinologist at Galway University Hospitals (GUH) and Professor of Medical Device Technology at NUI Galway took part in the Medtech Pulse event hosted by the university on 21 February. The event, in partnership with Bank of Ireland and Atlantic Bridge University Fund, offered insights into the medtech sector in Galway including the role of education, research, acceleration and commercialisation.

Roscommon appoints Ireland’s first Specialist Cancer Nurse

Bernadette Finneran, born in Manchester and living in County Roscommon for the last 30 years has been appointed as a Registered Advanced Nurse Practitioner (RANP) in Plastic Surgery at Roscommon University Hospital. Bernadette is the first RANP specialising in skin cancer in Ireland and is only one of three RANP posts in Plastic Surgery nationally. RANPs are the highest level of clinical experts in the nursing profession in Ireland today.

Mayo University Hospital using mobile computing to improve patient care

Mayo University Hospital has introduced 35 mobile ‘point of care’ computers which are available for staff in the wards throughout the hospital and in the Emergency Department. Each computer has a clinical grade keyboard and mouse which can be deep cleaned for infection control purposes.

Letterkenny University Hospital addressing sustainability issues in 2019

The Sustainability Team at Letterkenny University Hospital will be focusing on training staff, providing advice and introducing a number of initiatives to reduce the hospital’s impact on the environment in 2019.

Each month there will be a different sustainability focus at the hospital under four themes: waste prevention, water conservation, sustainable transport and energy efficiency.

The 2019 Special Olympics World Summer Games takes place in Abu Dhabi next month with two staff working at University Hospital Galway participating in the Games.

Gina Naughton, who is the Radiology Systems Manager, is the Head Coach for the Irish Ladies Basketball Team and Michelle O’Keane, who works for Aramark in the Café in UHG, will be representing Ireland in the Kayaking event.

HSCP refers to a range of diagnostic, therapeutic and social care professions that each play a unique, fundamentally important role in the provision of care to patients at the hospital.
