Minister for Health, Dr Leo Varadkar TD today (12 February 2016) officially launched the Sligo Medical Academy, an NUI Galway partnership with Saolta University Health Care Group and Sligo University Hospital for the training of doctors. The Academy is housed in a purpose-designed facility located within the premises of Sligo University Hospital.
The Emergency Department at University Hospital Galway is extremely busy today and as a result has seen an increase in the number of patients waiting for admission. This time of year is traditionally a busy period for hospitals and brings an anticipated increase in activity in Emergency Departments around the country. Much of this increase can be attributed to increases in the number of people suffering with flu and other seasonal illnesses common at this time of year.
Management at Roscommon University Hospital is advising that visiting restrictions are in place at the hospital due to the presence of influenza cases.
The hospital is seeking the cooperation of the general public in preventing the spread of flu by adhering to the following guidelines:
• Visitors are asked not to visit the hospital unless it is absolutely essential and only at designated visiting time 2pm-4pm and 6pm-8pm
Visiting restrictions remain in place at Mayo University Hospital in Castlebar due to a number of patients displaying symptoms of diarrhoea and vomiting caused by Norovirus, commonly known as the winter vomiting bug. To help curtail the spread of Norovirus, Mayo University Hospital is appealing to the public to adhere strictly to visiting restrictions and hygiene guidelines and help stop the spread of the virus to vulnerable patients.
The HSE was informed of two unrelated cases of Zika virus infection in two adults who are currently well and fully recovered. Both individuals have a history of travel to a Zika affected country. These are the first cases of Zika virus infection confirmed in Ireland. Neither case is at risk of pregnancy.

A new €1.4m day care centre for patients with Cystic Fibrosis (CF) was officially opened by An Taoiseach, Enda Kenny TD, today, Friday 15th January at Mayo University Hospital. The new centre will, for the first time, provide dedicated facilities for all of the regular out-patient and day care needs of children and young people with CF in the greater Mayo area.
The Saolta Hospital Group’s Atlantic Diabetes in Pregnancy Service (Atlantic DIP) under the leadership of Professor Fidelma Dunne has received over €825,000 in research funding from the Health Research Board (HRB) for clinical and health service research on diabetes before, during and after pregnancy.
