'It’s all up in the air'- TULCA Festival of Visual Arts comes to University Hospital Galway

'It’s all up in the air' by Rhona Byrne, an installation comprising of balloons shaped into a sculpture and suspended from the ceiling of the main foyer of University Hospital Galway, as part of the programme for TULCA 2015 which runs from the 14-29 of November. Mary Cremin, this year’s curator chose the piece with a healthcare setting in mind which evolved from the theme of seachange.  The installation provokes thought and presents the audience with a complex set of emotions.

Master's degree in Medical Physics at NUI Galway receives accreditation

Master's degree in Medical Physics at NUI Galway receives accreditation

The MSc Degree in Medical Physics at NUI Galway, in conjunction with the Department of Medical Physics and Bioengineering (MPBE) at Galway University Hospitals, was recently awarded accreditation from the North American Commission on Accreditation of Medical Physics Education Programs (CAMPEP). This is the first medical physics programme in Europe to receive this accreditation and only the second outside North America.

The Saolta University Health Care Group has decided to include University in the formal name of each of the hospitals in the Saolta Group. This recognises the key role of the Group’s academic partner NUI Galway in education, research and training across each hospital in the Saolta Group and is a further step in the implementation of the Saolta identity across the Group’s constituent hospitals.

Mayo Diabetes Forum launches Mayo Diabetes Awareness Week

To mark World Diabetes Day on the 14 November, the Mayo Diabetes Forum has put together a week of planned activities and events. This is part of Mayo Diabetes Awareness Week which runs from the 09 – 15 November 2015. The overall aim of the week is to raise awareness about diabetes and to highlight the importance of diabetes prevention and control. This forum is in partnership with representatives from Diabetes Ireland, Croi, General Practice, HSE Primary Care and HSE Hospital Services.

Opening of new mortuary viewing area and facilities for families of the deceased

A new mortuary viewing area and facilities for families of the deceased was officially opened on Wednesday, October 28th at Sligo Regional Hospital (SRH) by Tommie Gorman, RTE Northern Ireland Editor.              
 
The Slán Project will provide a private and dignified space for bereaved families to spend time with their deceased loved one in an appropriately designed facility.

Three staff nurses from University Hospital Galway, all members of this year's Galway Ladies Gaelic Football team have been nominated for the 2015 TG4 All Star Awards.
 
Team captain Geraldine Connelly from Dunmore works on St Michael's Ward, Tracey Leonard from Corofin and this year's vice -captain works on St Enda's Ward and Patricia Gleeson also from Corofin works in the haematology / oncology day ward.

The art work is on display in the Transit Lounge, main foyer of University Hospital Galway.
