The new Endoscopy Unit at Roscommon University Hospital (RUH) was officially opened on Wednesday, 07 September by Mr Simon Harris TD, Minister for Health. The new unit which opened its doors on 01 June, 2016 is a modern, patient-centred facility with two procedure rooms, a first stage and second stage recovery room and a reception area.
The Radiology Department at Portiuncula University Hospital Ballinasloe has just been shortlisted for the 2016 MEDRAY Award. The Irish Institute of Radiography and Radiation Therapy (IIRRT) once again have teamed up with MEDRAY Imaging Systems to the MEDRAY Award to a Radiographer / Radiation Therapist / Radiology Department who deals with many difficult and challenging tasks while in practice.
A new specialist Outreach Team was launched in Portiuncula University Hospital recently. This is a nurse-led service staffed by ICU/CCU nurses who identify patients at risk of deterioration on the ward as well as patients with high early warning scores.
The Outreach Team provides advice and clinical support to the ward staff by liaising with the primary and anaesthetic teams as early as possible to respond and deliver the most appropriate management.
Portiuncula University Hospital has a long established Nurse-led Oncology Unit which is a satellite service of University Hospital Galway. The team there provide a multi-disciplinary approach to care and has a number of visiting Medical Oncologists including Dr. Silvie Blazkova and Prof Maccon Keane and the visiting Radiation Oncologist is Dr. Nazir Ibrahim.
The newly developed dedicated paediatric area within the emergency department at University Hospital Galway opened its doors to paediatric patients in June. The new paediatric area was reconfigured from an existing space to facilitate the development and will accommodate all paediatric patients from 0 – 16 years of age and will cater for both medical and surgical patients.
As part of the ‘It’s OK to Ask’ campaign, the Health Research Board (HRB) Clinical Research Facility Galway (CRFG) will open its doors and welcome the public on September 1st from 4:00- 7:00 PM. The event will include short, accessible talks about specific clinical trials, a self-guided CRFG tour, and ten thematic exhibitions highlighting areas of research and ongoing clinical studies.
‘Head in the Hedgerow’ by artist Hugh Barr opened at Roscommon University Hospital on Tuesday August 9th and will continue until Wednesday August 31st. The exhibition features a series of paintings showing the diversity of plants and flowers found within the hedgerow.
James C. Harrold, Galway City Arts Officer officially launched Galway University Hospitals Arts Trust exhibition The savage loves his native shore in the Institute for Lifecourse and Society, NUI, Galway for Galway International Arts Festival on Saturday July 16.
