€1.65m Emergency Department at Letterkenny Hospital to re-open on 12 March

The Minister for Health, Dr James Reilly TD, visited Letterkenny General hospital today (Monday 03 March) for an event to mark the forthcoming opening of the Emergency Department/Acute Medical Assessment Unit which will become operational on Wednesday March 12: the new €1.65m unit will fully restore all Emergency Department facilities along with the 11 Bed Acute Medical Assessment Unit lost in the flood on July 26 which damaged 40% of the hospital’s ground floor space, affecting 70% of servic

Mammography Imaging Equipment at Sligo Regional Hospital

The West / North West Hospitals Group confirms that the mammography imaging equipment at Sligo Regional Hospital has been decommissioned. The equipment is over nine years old and does not meet current guidelines for breast care services: even if repaired it would suffer from inadequate detector size, inferior imaging performance and inability to fit up to date software.

An exhibition of photographs titled “Lost” by photographer Seamie Gallagher is currently on display on the Arts Corridor at University Hospital Galway. The exhibition runs until Friday 04 April and members of the public are welcome.

At the recent West / North West Hospital Group board meeting at the Croí Heart and Stroke Centre in Galway, the hospital group's new pilot website was launched. This was the first time that the board got to see the finished pilot and were given an interactive tour through some of the key areas of the website. 

Joint Committee on the Implementation of the Good Friday Agreement meeting in Letterkenny General Hospital

A delegation from the Joint Committee on the Implementation of the Good Friday Agreement met with representatives from the West/North West Hospitals Group in Letterkenny today. The purpose of the visit was to further develop the Committee’s understanding of the areas where cross-border cooperation in healthcare might be advanced.

Statement from the West / North West Hospitals Group following the February Board Meeting

At the February Board meeting a number of items were discussed including the ongoing review of Maternity Services for the Hospital Group.
 
The Board welcomed the first phase of the review and has accepted the short term recommendations which are to further develop the clinical governance structures across the Group and to develop consistent models of care.
 

Countdown to Smoke Free Campus at Mayo General Hospital

Mayo General Hospital (MGH) is introducing a smoke free campus policy on Wednesday 05 March.
 
From this date it will no longer be possible to smoke anywhere on the hospital grounds, for example entrances, doorways, walkways, internal roads, car parks, cars etc.
 

The West / North West Hospitals Group is looking for Volunteers for a Patient Council

The West / North West Hospitals Group is currently looking for people to volunteer to be part of the Patient Council for the Group. The aim of the Patient Council is to work closely with staff in the Hospital Group to improve the experience patients have when using the services of the hospitals in the Group.

Professor of Midwifery at NUI Galway to support the West / North West Hospitals Group work in Maternity Services

Professor Declan Devane, Chair of Midwifery at the School of Nursing and Midwifery, NUI Galway has been seconded to the West / North West Hospitals Group (WNWHG) on a half-time basis over five years and took up his post on 20 January 2014.
 
The Professor of Midwifery post will provide strategic and clinical leadership and direction for midwifery and maternity related nursing services for the hospital group and it is the first post of its kind in the country.
 

New Clinical Directors and Chief Academic Officer for the West/North West Hospitals Group

The West / North West Hospitals Group has recently appointed four Clinical Directors and an interim Chief Academic Officer to advance the integration of the Hospital Group and to provide leadership for training and education across the Group.
