An Taoiseach Launches Mayo Medical Academy

On 14 December, An Taoiseach Enda Kenny TD officially launched the Mayo Medical Academy, an NUI Galway partnership with Saolta University Health Care Group and Mayo University Hospital for the training of doctors. The Academy is housed in a purpose-designed facility located in the former chapel on the grounds of Mayo University Hospital.

Saolta University Health Care Group/ University Hospital Galway is again appealing to the public to keep the Emergency Department for emergencies ONLY and to contact their GP or GP Out of Hours services where possible as the hospital prepares for INMO industrial action in its Emergency Department from 2pm to 4pm tomorrow (Tuesday December 15).

Irish Cancer Society Officially Launches Daffodil Centre in University Hospital Galway

The Irish Cancer Society today, 10 December, 2015 officially launched its Daffodil Centre at University Hospital Galway with an event celebrating the volunteers, the hospital and supporters. The Daffodil Centre, which is run by an Irish Cancer Society Cancer Nurse and 18 trained volunteers, is an information service on-site in the hospital, where people affected by or concerned about cancer can receive information and support.

Staff in Merlin Park University Hospital launched the HSE Calorie Posting policy in the restaurant for staff and visitors on Wednesday 02 December. Calorie information is now displayed clearly on menus and display boards. This policy is being implemented on a phased basis and has started with breakfast menus. In addition, restaurant staff are encouraging healthy eating by promoting healthy swap options from the menu.

Aramark Staff in Mayo University Hospital launched the HSE Calorie Posting policy in the restaurant for staff and visitors recently. Calorie information is now displayed clearly on menus and display boards. This policy is being implemented on a phased basis with breakfast menus. In addition, restaurant staff are encouraging healthy eating by promoting healthy swap options from the menu.

A Minor Injuries Study day was held recently in Roscommon University Hospital.  Doctors and nurses working in the Minor Injuries Departments across the Saolta University Health Care Group attended.  The study day was designed around the learning requirements of the multi-disciplinary team treating minor injuries in a Minor Injuries Unit or an Emergency Department.

Staff at Roscommon University  Hospital were recently presented with the Best Large Workplace Award  as part of the Smarter Travel Workplaces’ Pedometer Challenge, the award was based on the overall staff participation rate of 45%.

Portiuncula University Hospital marks World COPD Day

To mark World COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease) Awareness Day Aoife Folliard, Clinical Nurse Specialist, Respiratory and Emer Griffin, Physiotherapist are holding an information stand in the main foyer of the hospital today (10am-2pm). The team will be on hand to answer your questions and help you to learn more about COPD with the main focus on smoking cessation, inhaler technique, peak flow checks and spirometry (simple breathing test which can aid the diagnosis of COPD).
