Galway University Hospitals reaches milestone as the 500th patient undergoes minimally invasive prostate cancer radiation treatment

Today, Friday 01 November, the 500th patient to undergo prostate brachytherapy for the treatment of prostate cancer was seen at Galway University Hospitals (GUH). Brachytherapy is a once off treatment option that involves the implantation of radiation seeds directly into the prostate as an alternative to conventional external beam radiotherapy and surgery.
 

Donation of two sample labelling systems to Roscommon Hospital

Last week the Hospital Action Committee presented two sample labelling machines to Roscommon Hospital. The machines are used to print labels for blood and other clinical samples and the benefits are already being seen at Roscommon Hospital.
 

Board of the West / North West Hospitals Group meets in Mayo General Hospital

The Board of the West / North West Hospitals Group met in Mayo General Hospital today, Tuesday 22 October. This was the sixth meeting of the Board this year and the first visit of the Board to Mayo.

On behalf of University Hospital Galway, I would like to apologise to Mr Halappanavar and family for the events related to his wife’s care that contributed to her tragic death and to offer our sincere sympathies to all concerned.
 
The HIQA report that has been published this afternoon follows on from the coroner’s inquest and the HSE investigation into Mrs Halappanavar’s death.
 

Update from the West / North West Hospitals Group - Non Consultant Hospital Doctors strike

All our hospitals in the West / North West Hospitals Group are coping today (8-10-13) with a reduced number in rostered NCHDs.
 
In preparation for today’s strike, the level of planned activity was scaled back to match the available resources.
 

Minor Upgrading Work commencing at Sligo Regional Hospital, Emergency Department

Minor upgrading work is commencing in the Emergency Department at Sligo Regional Hospital on Monday 30 September.
 
Commenting on the planned works, Grainne McCann, General Manager said, “The upgrading works will involve creating a dedicated treatment and waiting area for children, an improved minor injuries area and an additional reception area. The works are due to be completed in December.

Update on the West/North West Hospitals Group at the Regional Health Forum

Bill Maher, CEO of the West/North West Hospitals Group and Tony Canavan, Chief Operating Officer attended the Regional Health Forum meeting in Galway yesterday and gave a brief overview of the formation of the new Hospital Group and formally welcomed Sligo, Mayo and Letterkenny Hospitals to the Group.

GUH is holding its fourth annual Ecumenical Memorial Service on Saturday 05 October at 2.30 pm in the staff canteen, Nurses Home, University Hospital Galway.
 

HIQA report Letterkenny General Hospital

On July 9, 2013, HIQA carried out an announced monitoring assessment at Letterkenny General Hospital, Donegal.
 
This phase of monitoring is a contributory phase towards preparing service providers for the eventual monitoring of services against the National Standards for Safer Better Healthcare.
