Letterkenny General Hospital picks up award

Recently the Emergency Abdominal Surgery Course (EASC) was  awarded two significant  peer judged regional and national awards for medical education.

The course developed in Letterkenny Hospital under the Donegal Clinical Research Academy mentorship,  recently was the recipient for the National Irish Health Care Awards held in the Shelbourne Hotel in Dublin on November 6th and the  Saolta University Health Care Group CEO Awards in Galway on November 7th.

Mr Michael Sugrue, Surgeon , was delighted to accept the Irish Medical Health Care Award, with Dr Siobhan McGrane, Radiologist in Letterkenny. He indicated they were all delighted with the phenomenal success nationally and internationally of the course. Mr Sugrue said its success lay in the educational model used,  and the fact that the course crossed all disciplines that deal with Emergency Care from Surgeons to Radiologist and Nurses..

Mr Sugrue said he would now like to expand on the development  of quality indicators  in Emergency Surgery and the course combined with other areas of research will ensure that patients do better.  DCRA would be well positioned to do this.

The next course in Ireland will be on April 10th 2015 and will host 6 world leaders as well as Irish experts in Emergency Abdominal Care.

Mr Sugrue stated the program complimented the Irish Acute Surgery Program led by Professor Frank Keane and Mr Ken Mealy. He was grateful for support from RCSI and Letterkenny Hospital to allow the course to develop.
