Portiuncula University Hospital

Portiuncula University Hospital is a Model 3 hospital providing 24/7 acute surgery, acute medicine and critical care along with Emergency Department and maternity services to adults and children in the catchment areas of East Galway, Westmeath, North Tipperary, Roscommon and Offaly. The hospital has natural referral pathways to the Midlands, particularly in respect of patients that are referred in via the Emergency Department and discharged back for appropriate care i.e. orthopaedics, elderly care services etc. In addition, the hospital’s paediatric service has linkages with Crumlin Children’s Hospital for shared care arrangement in relation to oncology.

Portiuncula has academic links with the University of Limerick post-graduate training, Medical Training Schemes for Interns, SHO’s and Registrars and an Overseas Medical Student Programme. In January 2013 a new medical academy opened on site in conjunction with NUI Galway.

Reduction in number of visitors to Portiuncula University Hospital can help protect vulnerable patients

Portiuncula University Hospital (PUH) has asked families and loved ones of inpatients at the hospital to ensure that numbers of visitors are kept to a minimum in order to minimise the exposure of vulnerable patients to viruses.

The hospital has also reminded visitors that mask wearing is mandatory in all areas of the hospital. This is to protect patients and staff.

New Patient Advocacy and Liaison Service Coordinator for Portiuncula University Hospital

Portiuncula University Hospital is delighted to announce the appointment of Sharon Donoghue to the role of Patient Advocacy and Liaison Service (PALS) Coordinator.  

The Patient Advice and Liaison Service Co-ordinator acts as the main contact between patients, their families, carers and the hospital. They ensure that the patient voice is heard either through the patient directly or through a nominated representative.

Portiuncula University Hospital Offers Advice and Support for National Breastfeeding Week

National Breastfeeding Week runs from 01-07 October and it’s a great opportunity to promote the importance of breastfeeding and the many positive health benefits it provides for both mother and baby. It’s also an opportunity to provide information on breastfeeding supports and to let parents and parents-to-be know where they can access this information and support.

Portiuncula University Hospital marks World Patient Safety Day with a focus on medication safety

Portiuncula University Hospital (PUH) is marking World Patient Safety Day on Saturday 17 September by raising awareness of safe medication practices. The Medication Safety Committee in PUH is encouraging the public to get to know their medication better with an awareness campaign called “Know, Check, Ask”.

Re-launch of protected mealtimes initiative in Portiuncula University Hospital

The protective mealtimes initiative has been relaunched in Portiuncula University Hospital, the aim of protected mealtimes is to help patients get the most from their meals. This is one of a number of initiatives being rolled out in PUH to improve quality patient care. An uninterrupted ward environment, presentation, timing and nutritional content of food are really important for a patient's recovery.
