Face to face outpatient clinics remain curtailed at hospitals across the Saolta group

In early January all but very urgent and time critical inpatient and day surgery was curtailed across the hospitals* in the Saolta group. In light of very significant pressure in the hospitals caused by COVID-19 and high community infection rates, it is now necessary to continue the current restrictions to ensure patient safety and wellbeing. The deferrals are in place for a further two week period and will be kept under review.

An appeal to the people of Galway to stay vigilant and halt the spread of COVID-19 in the community

Due to a rapid increase in COVID-19 infection rates in Galway, the HSE has joined with An Garda Síochána and Local Government to appeal to the public to stay vigilant and halt the spread of the virus in the community.

The three principle agencies have come together to highlight the gravity of the public health risk in Galway where there is a tenfold increase in COVID-19 daily infection rate compared to the first wave.

Mayo University Hospital continues to be extremely busy

Mayo University Hospital continues to be extremely busy today (12 January) with resulting pressure on bed availability in the hospital.

The hospital is currently treating a large number of COVID-19 positive patients; at 8pm yesterday evening there were 91 patients in MUH with COVID-19.

It has been an extremely busy weekend at Letterkenny University Hospital. Throughout the weekend there has been a large number of patients presenting with suspect or confirmed COVID 19, many of whom required admission to the hospital.

Deferral of face to face outpatient appointments at Sligo University Hospital

Face to Face outpatient appointments at Sligo University Hospital are being deferred for the next two weeks. The hospital is now holding virtual outpatient clinics with some exceptions.

Patients who previously received a letter confirming an outpatient appointment are asked not to attend the appointment unless they get a call from the hospital confirming that the appointment is going ahead.

The hospitals in the Saolta Group are deferring all but very urgent and time critical inpatient and day surgery from 05 January. Outpatient clinics will also be curtailed and some of these will take place virtually unless it is absolutely necessary for patients to be seen.

Portiuncula University Hospital rolls out COVID-19 vaccination programme

The roll-out of the COVID-19 vaccination campaign began in Portiuncula University Hospital today, Wednesday January 6th. Louise Ann McGrath, Clinical Nurse Manager 2, St John’s Ward was the first staff member in the hospital to receive the Pfizer BioNTech vaccine. Louise received the vaccine from her nursing colleague, Mary Barrett, Assistant Director of Nursing and Peer Vaccinator.

Dr Gerry O’Mara, first staff member Roscommon University Hospital to receive COVID-19 vaccine

The roll-out of the COVID-19 vaccination campaign began in Roscommon University Hospital on Wednesday January 6th. Dr Gerry O’Mara, Consultant Physician was the first staff member in the hospital to receive the Pfizer BioNTech vaccine.
