Presentation of cheque by the Castleblakeney Fundraising Committee to the Cancer Services Patient Comfort Fund at Galway University Hospitals

Members of the Castleblakeney Fundraising Committee presenting a cheque for €8,603 to Galway University Hospitals (GUH) this week. The funds were raised during last October’s Bank Holiday weekend from events such as a Farmers’ Market, Fancy Dress, Children’s Disco, Cycles, Walks, Head Shaves and a Night in the Bog.

Galway University Hospitals Arts Trust Announces Winner of First Poetry Competition

To mark the tenth anniversary of the ‘Poems for Patience’ project, Galway University Hospitals Arts Trust launched a poetry competition in 2013.  The Trust was delighted with the incredibly high standard and the huge response from poets.  The winning entry is called ‘The River’ by Jane Clarke.  Jane will be presented with a copy of her poem in a poster format and will read it at the ‘Poems for Patience’ launch on Friday 26 April on the Arts Corridor of University Hospital, Galway as part of t

Official Opening of the new Acute Dialysis Unit in University Hospital Galway

A new Acute Dialysis Unit with three haemodialysis stations has been officially opened at University Hospital Galway. The unit which has been operational since last November is a clinical necessity for acutely unwell patients of UHG who are now able to have their dialysis on site and will no longer need to be transported to the Dialysis Unit in Merlin Park for treatment as had been the case previously.

I think anyone following the inquest proceedings will have appreciated that the untimely death of Ms Halappanavar caused deep upset among hospital staff, particularly those who were directly involved in her care and who came to give evidence to the Coroner. Our senior counsel has thanked the Coroner and I would like to add our thanks to him and his team, and the Gardaí who collected the depositions on his behalf, for their courtesy and understanding.
 

First Paediatric Patient starts on new drug for treatment of Cystic Fibrosis at Galway University Hospitals

 
Galway University Hospitals is delighted to announce that the first paediatric patient who is suited to the new drug Kalydeco has started treatment at the hospital.
 
Kalydeco is a new innovative medicine for the treatment of cystic fibrosis (CF) in patients who have the G551D mutation.
 

Volunteer Service’s First Anniversary celebrated at Mayo General Hospital

To mark the first anniversary of the Volunteer Service at Mayo General Hospital, staff and management have paid tribute to the many volunteers who have generously given of their time over the past year.  The volunteers provide a friendly and reassuring welcome to patients and visitors to Mayo General Hospital, and also assist and guide patients and visitors to the various wards, departments and clinics in the hospital, if requested.

The Board of the Galway and Roscommon University Hospitals Group met in Roscommon Hospital yesterday (Monday 25 March); this was the second meeting of the full board since the non-Executive Directors of the Board were appointed in January.
 

Second Validation Project to Tackle Outpatient Waiting List Underway at Galway University Hospitals

The outpatient waiting list is a major challenge for the Galway and Roscommon University Hospital Group. The Department of Health’s Special Delivery Unit (SDU) has set a target that by November 2013 no patient should wait longer than 12 months for an outpatient clinic appointment and this is a primary focus of the Group in 2013.
