Portiuncula University Hospital

Portiuncula University Hospital is a Model 3 hospital providing 24/7 acute surgery, acute medicine and critical care along with Emergency Department and maternity services to adults and children in the catchment areas of East Galway, Westmeath, North Tipperary, Roscommon and Offaly. The hospital has natural referral pathways to the Midlands, particularly in respect of patients that are referred in via the Emergency Department and discharged back for appropriate care i.e. orthopaedics, elderly care services etc. In addition, the hospital’s paediatric service has linkages with Crumlin Children’s Hospital for shared care arrangement in relation to oncology.

Portiuncula has academic links with the University of Limerick post-graduate training, Medical Training Schemes for Interns, SHO’s and Registrars and an Overseas Medical Student Programme. In January 2013 a new medical academy opened on site in conjunction with NUI Galway.

17 staff from Portiuncula University Hospital are part of the Health Voices Choir which is comprised of staff from across the Health Service. The choir have recently recorded two songs for Christmas, “Carol of the Bells” and “He Ain’t Heavy, He’s My Brother”.

We are pleased to announce that the Radiology Department at Portiuncula University Hospital Ballinasloe has been awarded the 2016 MEDRAY Radiology Department of the year award. The award was presented at The Irish Institute of Radiography and Radiation Therapy (IIRRT) annual conference which was held in Dublin on 08 October 2016.

Radiology Department at Portiuncula University Hospital shortlisted for 2016 MEDRAY award - Public can support the Radiology Department by voting online before 14 September

The Radiology Department at Portiuncula University Hospital Ballinasloe has just been shortlisted for the 2016 MEDRAY Award. The Irish Institute of Radiography and Radiation Therapy (IIRRT) once again have teamed up with MEDRAY Imaging Systems to the MEDRAY Award  to a Radiographer / Radiation Therapist / Radiology Department who deals with many difficult and challenging tasks while in practice.

Critical Care Outreach Team launched in Portiuncula University Hospital

A new specialist Outreach Team was launched in Portiuncula University Hospital recently. This is a nurse-led service staffed by ICU/CCU nurses who identify patients at risk of deterioration on the ward as well as patients with high early warning scores.

The Outreach Team provides advice and clinical support to the ward staff by liaising with the primary and anaesthetic teams as early as possible to respond and deliver the most appropriate management.
