The Endoscopy service in Mayo University Hospital is located within the Day Services Unit. The Endoscopy department has 3 procedure rooms and 6 recovery beds. The unit provides diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopic procedures for patients in the Mayo catchment area. The department runs sessions for medical endoscopy (Gastroenterology), surgical endoscopy (Surgical Consultants) and Bronchoscopy (Respiratory medicine).

How to refer;
Direct Access Endoscopy is available via the Endoscopy Specific referral form on Healthlinks. The CNM 2 Endoscopy Triage will receive all referrals and decide on Triage outcome in consultation with Gastroenterologist Consultant. All referrals sent via Healthlinks will receive a response.

Surgical Endoscopy

  • Mr Igor Soric, Consultant Surgeon

Procedures undertaken;

  • Gastroscopy
  • Colonoscopy
  • Sigmoidoscopy
  • Proctoscopy +/- haemorrhoid banding/injection

How to refer;
All patients referred to Surgical teams are timely triaged by consultants as per information provided. Patients are reviewed & examined in the outpatient department. Then, if deemed appropriate an endoscopic procedure is arranged otherwise alternative investigations are requested as indicated.

Respiratory Endoscopy

  • Dr Cyril Rooney, Consultant in Respiratory medicine

  • Dr Dominic Doyle, Consultant in Respiratory medicine

Procedures undertaken;

  • Bronchoscopy

How to refer;
All patients referred to respiratory medicine are reviewed in the outpatient department. Then, if deemed appropriate an endoscopic procedure is arranged.
