Portiuncula University Hospital

Portiuncula University Hospital is a Model 3 hospital providing 24/7 acute surgery, acute medicine and critical care along with Emergency Department and maternity services to adults and children in the catchment areas of East Galway, Westmeath, North Tipperary, Roscommon and Offaly. The hospital has natural referral pathways to the Midlands, particularly in respect of patients that are referred in via the Emergency Department and discharged back for appropriate care i.e. orthopaedics, elderly care services etc. In addition, the hospital’s paediatric service has linkages with Crumlin Children’s Hospital for shared care arrangement in relation to oncology.

Portiuncula has academic links with the University of Limerick post-graduate training, Medical Training Schemes for Interns, SHO’s and Registrars and an Overseas Medical Student Programme. In January 2013 a new medical academy opened on site in conjunction with NUI Galway.

Portiuncula University Hospital (PUH) is delighted to announce the appointment of Siobháin Kiernan to the role of Advanced Nurse Practitioner in General Paediatric Integrated Care.   

Taoiseach Simon Harris officially opens 50 Bedded Ward Block at Portiuncula University Hospital 

Taoiseach Simon Harris has today (Wednesday 11 September) officially opened a new 50 bedded ward block at Portiuncula University Hospital.  The project is a €35 million capital investment for the hospital site.   

This new development delivers in-patient single room accommodation in line with all current modern-day standards. The project consists of a two-storey building and is linked to the existing hospital by a corridor. 

Visiting Restrictions in place at Portiuncula University Hospital

Portiuncula University Hospital is asking people to comply with visitor restrictions on St Joseph’s ward due to a number of cases of the vomiting bug (Norovirus) on the ward.

Visitors to the affected ward will be facilitated on compassionate grounds, on an exceptional basis only. To arrange a visit on compassionate grounds, please contact the ward manager in advance.

The Emergency Department (ED) at Portiuncula University Hospital (PUH) is extremely busy today and the hospital is advising that patients who attend ED for routine and non-urgent treatment will experience very long waiting times.
