Sligo University Hospital Celebrates International Nurses Day

International Nurses Day is celebrated around the world every May on the anniversary of Florence Nightingale’s birth.

To mark the occasion, Sligo University Hospital held an event called “A celebration of nurses on International Nurses Day” on Thursday 16 May from 10am to 2pm in the main foyer of the hospital.

The aim of the day was to showcase the amazing work that nurses do at the hospital and included a number of nursing staff hosting their own stands to highlight their work. They included a Clinical Nurse Specialist in Dermatology, a Clinical Nurse Specialist in Tissue Viability and an Advanced Nurse Practitioner who showcased her work with Older People. In addition, St Angela’s College, Sligo had a stand with information on undergraduate and postgraduate nursing courses and the Theatre Department had a display of old equipment, uniforms and books.

There were quizzes and games including a competition for the fastest bed maker.

Marion Ryder, Director of Nursing at the hospital commented, “I was delighted to open our International Day of the Nurse event in the hospital. The range and depth of expertise that our nurses have gained through education and real-life experience was evident and I think it is important that we take time to recognise our fantastic nurses and their role in transforming health care.”
