Quality and Patient Safety Symposium at Letterkenny University Hospital
Letterkenny University Hospital (LUH) recently held a Quality and Patient Safety Symposium which was open to all staff in the hospital. The event was very well attended with over 500 participants from all disciplines and grades taking part over the course of 3 days.
The programme consisted of presentations on quality and patient safety topics including falls prevention, recording and preventing pressure ulcers, medication safety and HIQA Standards. In addition there were targeted 30 minute parallel workshops open to staff. There was huge support from staff at local and regional level and many specialists gave their time to facilitate workshops. The main event organisers were Eileen Egan and Tina Porter from the Quality and Safety Department with support from Dr Anne Drake, Director of Nursing and Quality and Safety Lead at the hospital.
Sean Murphy, General Manager commented on the success of the event. He said, “There was huge enthusiasm from all levels of staff in the hospital and the initiative was widely supported by all disciplines. The engagement by staff in the Quality and Patient Safety Agenda was confirmed with the feedback highlighting that 100% of participants found the information sessions relevant to their practice and they would change their practice as a result. This is tangible evidence of delivering a quality culture here in LUH.
“The symposium is now set to become an annual event keeping the culture of patient quality and safety at the forefront of the LUH agenda.”
