University Hospital Galway (UHG) has become the first hospital in Ireland to introduce a new device designed to help patients suffering with heart failure better monitor their fluid levels in the body. Galway woman, Sheila Concannon from Spiddal, was the first patient in Ireland to be fitted with this early warning sensor which alerts medics to the patient’s condition worsening.
Galway University Hospitals (GUH) and the Saolta University Health Care Group are pleased to announce further progress in the delivery of the major capital projects planned for GUH.
To manage delivery and timelines for the required infrastructure a formal project board has been established. The board is now finalising a master plan for the Galway city campus which will enhance the delivery of essential health care services for our population.

The new Regional Executive Officer (REO) for HSE West and North West, Tony Canavan, has acknowledged the progress the Enhanced Community Care (ECC) Programme is making, as new 2023 figures indicate significant improvements in long waiting times and outpatient appointments as well as a high number of patients seen in the community rather than in hospital.
National Inpatient Experience Survey 2024 launches at Mayo University Hospital
The National Inpatient Experience Survey is a nationwide survey asking patients about their recent experience in hospital. The survey is a partnership between the Department of Health, the Health Service Executive (HSE) and the Health Information and Quality Authority (HIQA).
Mayo University Hospital (MUH) welcomes the progress in developing a new two-story extension to include extension of the Emergency Department and new Acute Medical Assessment Unit (AMAU).
The extension of the Emergency Department is at Ground Floor with a new Acute Medical Assessment Unit on the first floor.
The new ED facilities will be constructed in the courtyard connecting into the existing ED. The existing ED will also undergo major refurbishment as part of the plans.
Health services in the West and North West wish to remind the public of all their care options ahead of the May Bank Holiday weekend.
HSE West and North West has plans in place across its hospital and community services to ensure patients can access the care they need in the right setting.
Additional GP out-of-hours services will operate across the region over the bank holiday.
Pharmacies are also on hand to provide support and advice throughout the long weekend.
One year after launching in Donegal, the HSE Pathfinder team have been called out to the homes of 511 older people in the region, and managed to keep 81% of patients safely at home.
