On Tuesday, 12 November at a special awards ceremony held in the Diabetes Centre at Sligo University Hospital, Diabetes Ireland honoured five people living with type 1 diabetes with special 50-year achievement medals in recognition of their courage and endurance in living with diabetes.
The five recipients from across Sligo, Donegal and Roscommon who attend the Diabetes Outpatients Clinic at Sligo University Hospital, all received a 50-year achievement medal.
People living with diabetes in the West, who are benefiting from faster access to specialised care as a result of the new HSE Chronic Disease Hubs, have praised the enhancements in diabetes care as they prepare to mark World Diabetes Day on 14 November. The move away from hospital-based care means that patients have access to highly specialised clinical teams, closer to their home.
Tánaiste, Micheál Martin has today (Friday 01 November) officially opened the new state-of-the-art outpatient unit for adults with Cystic Fibrosis (CF) at Merlin Park University Hospital (MPUH). The new unit cost €3.64m to construct with €700,000 funded by Cystic Fibrosis Ireland and the balance funded by the HSE.

Mina McNamara, whose husband Paul passed away suddenly from a brain aneurysm on 07 July 2022, has generously donated €7,788 to the Acute Stroke Unit at University Hospital Galway (UHG) in memory of her late husband Paul, a native of the Claddagh in Galway City.
The 8km Paul McNamara Memorial Walk Fundraiser, now in its second year, took place last July with all proceeds going to NLN Quest Brain Injury Services and the Acute Stroke Unit, UHG.
