There is currently one whole time permanent Senior Physiotherapist position available in the Older Persons’ service, at Mayo University Hospital, Saolta University Health Care Group, HSE West.

The permanent post is primarily located in the Physiotherapy Department, Mayo University Hospital working with the Older Persons Services on site and in collaboration with Community colleagues in ICPOP.

A panel may be created for Senior Physiotherapist, Older Persons, including Medical and Stroke care from which permanent and specified purpose vacancies of full or part time duration may be filled. The successful candidate may be required to work in any service area within the vicinity as the need arises.

Details of Physiotherapy Service
Mayo University Hospital (MUH) is a model 3 hospital with inpatient services across general medicine, general surgery, acute stroke, respiratory care, critical care, orthopaedics, maternity and paediatric services. Physiotherapy services in the Emergency Department include Frailty at the front door, MSK and respiratory services. Outpatient physiotherapy services are provided in MSK, Women’s Health, paediatric, respiratory and lymphoedema.

Details of Older Persons’ Service
The National Integrated Care Programme for Older Persons’ (NICPOP) is leading out on the development of an end to end pathway that describes cohesive primary, secondary and acute care services for older people with a specific focus on those with more complex needs and frailty.

The core aim is to develop and implement specialist multidisciplinary geriatric services, with dedicated specialist in-patient wards, providing Comprehensive Geriatric Assessment (CGA), treatment, rehabilitation and appropriate discharge planning. This pathway for older persons supports better outcomes, reduced readmissions rates, reduced rates of long-term care use, reduced functional decline and improved quality of life.

The senior post in Older Persons Services will support patient flow and the safe management of older persons in acute care, from the Emergency department and across to inpatient areas. The focus will be on providing early assessment and intervention for older persons and ensuring safe and timely discharge.

The post will provide a 7/7 service ensuring that older persons receive the level of service required 7 days per week. The post holder will work with therapy colleagues as part of a roster.

The post holder will be primarily based on the MUH site and will be a key member of the older persons’ physiotherapy team delivering safe and effective physiotherapy care. The post holder will work with the inter-professional team within the service.

The Older Persons Physiotherapy Team includes
Clinical Specialist, Older Persons, Senior Physiotherapist Medical (inpatients), Senior Physiotherapist Stroke (inpatients) Senior Physiotherapist Older Persons, Senior Physiotherapist Frailty at the Front Door (FFD), staff grades and therapy assistants.
