Volunteer with RUH

Volunteer Service at Roscommon University Hospital

The Volunteer Service has been in operation in RUH since January 2024. We are still recruiting Volunteers for various roles. Some people volunteer based on their specific skillset whether that’s wanting to develop a certain skillset or share their skillset with others. Whatever your skillset is we would be delighted for you to share it with us. All roles will require Garda Vetting.

Some of the Volunteer roles we have are;

Meet, Greet & Guide

  • To give a reassuring first impression with a friendly welcome
  • To observe for individuals who look lost or unsure of where they are going, approach them and ask if you can be of assistance.
  • To assist with escorting/directing individuals to various Departments/Clinics/wards/Outpatients within Roscommon University Hospital
  • To be actively involved in talking to patients in a befriending role
  • Volunteers assist patients as they check in for appointments and direct/escort them to the relevant department

Patient Companionship

  • Reading aloud from a book or local newspaper, discuss topics of interest with patient
  • Playing cards
  • Crafts - maybe help finishing a project e.g. knitting.
  • Sitting quietly in companionship
  • Run errands for the patient such as newspaper, toiletries

Hairdressers/Barbers

  • To provide a voluntary service in Hairdressing as a member of the Complementary Therapies Team,
  • To provide, cut, wash and blow dry to patients in need of the service
  • Minimum of 2 years’ experience in area of expertise, ideally in a healthcare setting
  • A practical appreciation of the challenges faced by those availing of palliative services.

Nail Technicians

  • Cleaning and shaping patients nails with sanitised nail tools
  • Removing existing nail polish residue from fingernails
  • Consulting with patient on nail polish colour preference and desired nail length and shape
  • Sterilizing nail tools and equipment prior to use and after each nail painting session
  • Massaging patients hands and arms

Complimentary therapists such as reflexology or massage therapy.

  • To provide a complimentary therapy services such as Reflexology or massage on the wards in RUH
  • To work with patients who have a range of complex health needs to help alleviate stress, pain, anxiety, nausea, fatigue and improve concentration

Don’t forget to include two referees of whom you are known to but not related. Upon receipt of the completed application form the Volunteer Coordinator will make contact with you to arrange an informal meet and greet along with another staff member.
