Galway University Hospitals celebrates a morning of poetry as part of the Cúirt International Festival of Literature
Poet Theo Dorgan will officially launch the Galway University Hospitals Arts Trust’s eleventh series of ‘Poems for Patience’ on Friday 11 April at 11am in the Arts Corridor of UHG.
The ‘Poems for Patience’ theme chosen by Theo for the 2014 event is “We are not separate from the world.” Theo will introduce 21 thoughtful poems he has selected by celebrated Irish and International poets, including works by Galway poets Moya Cannon, Rita Ann Higgins, Mary O’Malley, Patrick Deeley, as well as Samuel Green, Carol Ann Duffy, Sharon Olds, and many more.
‘Poems for Patience’ is part of an ongoing initiative to introduce poetry into Galway University Hospitals (GUH). The poetry will be displayed throughout the waiting areas of University Hospital Galway and Merlin Park University Hospital.
The concept of poems in waiting rooms was piloted in London in 1998 when poems were commissioned on the theme of waiting. Galway University Hospitals Arts Trust’s first series of Poems for Patience in partnership with the Cúirt International Festival of Literature was launched at the festival in 2004.
The poems for the 2014 event will be on display on the Arts Corridor of University Hospital, Galway until May 25 2014.
Members of the public are welcome to attend the launch on Friday 11 April at 11am in the Arts Corridor of UHG.
Also at the launch, Kevin Higgins, Writer in Residence at GUH will introduce Sighle Meehan, the 2014 winner of the Galway University Hospitals Arts Trust second poetry competition. Sighle will be presented with a copy of her poem in a poster format and will read the winning entry Just the One.
The event is coordinated by Margaret Flannery, Arts Director, Galway University Hospitals Arts Trust. For further information contact guhartstrust@hse.ie or 091 544979 / 087 1250461.
