New state-of-the-art Cardiothoracic ward opens at University Hospital Galway

A new Cardiothoracic ward has opened at University Hospital Galway. The 13 bedded state-of-the-art ward is dedicated to cardiothoracic surgery.

The ward is built to the highest standard and accommodates three  isolation rooms, 3 two-bedded wards and a four-bedded ward depending on the needs of the patients.

Letterkenny University Hospital under increasing pressure due to COVID-19 outbreaks and high ED attendances

Letterkenny University Hospital is dealing with a significant increase in COVID-19 positive patients while also seeing very high numbers of attendances through the Emergency Department.

Visiting Access Limited at St Teresa’s Ward in Roscommon University Hospital

Due to an outbreak of COVID-19, access for visitors to St Teresa’s Ward at Roscommon University Hospital is currently limited to compassionate grounds only, these visits should be arranged in advance with the nurse in charge.

Access for visitors to St Bridget’s Ward and St Coman’s Ward remains by appointment only. Visits must be pre-arranged by family members / visitors by contacting the ward or unit in advance.

UHG Children’s Remembrance Mass

The Children’s Remembrance Day Committee at University Hospital Galway is inviting families who have experienced the death of a child to remember their loved ones in a special Mass of Remembrance, which will take place on Sunday, 19 June in the Holy Family Church, Mervue at 3pm.

The theme for this year’s Mass is “Enduring Love” and Cathy Quinn a Midwife specialising in Perinatal Bereavement and Lecturer in University of Limerick will reflect on this theme as guest speaker.

The Emergency Department at Letterkenny University Hospital has been extremely busy over the past few days with unusually high numbers patients presenting for treatment. Over the weekend 224 people attended the Emergency Department.

Two new replacement orthopaedic operating theatres on the Merlin Park site, which cost €10.57m to design, build and equip, will be used for the first time this Friday 10 June 2022.

Western Region Education Network - Cancer Research Conference

Cancer specialists from across the West and Northwest gathered in Sligo recently to discuss ways of improving cancer services, research and education for the region. The Western Region Education Network (WREN) conference in the Radisson Hotel, Sligo on Friday 27 May saw consultants, nurses and members of the Saolta Cancer MCAN (Managed Clinical Academic Network) come together for the first time in person.

Galway University Hospitals to hold free Stoma Care Information Evening

Galway University Hospitals Stoma Care Unit is holding a free public information meeting for anyone who has had or is due to undergo stoma surgery. The event will take place on the 09 June in the Clayton Hotel, Galway from 5pm to 9pm with talks starting at 6pm to 7pm. Family members, friends and carers are also welcome to attend. 

Entitled “A stoma in your life “, the evening will focus on quality of life issues and looking together at positive influences on living with a stoma. 

Pride Month at Galway University Hospitals

Galway University Hospitals is marking the start of Pride month with an information stand in the main foyer of UHG on Friday 03 June from 1-2pm and will be welcoming Maria Walsh, MEP to launch the event at 2pm. The event will highlight a month of educational talks for staff focused on inclusion and diversity for both LGBT+ patients and staff. Members of the public attending the hospital for appointments on the day are also welcome.
