Launch of ‘An Bhean Ghlúine’ at Portiuncula University Hospital as part of National Heritage Week

The launch of ‘An Bhean Ghlúine’ ebook and project took place at Portiuncula University Hospital yesterday as part of National Heritage Week. The project was funded by the Heritage Council and Galway County Council.

‘An Bhean Ghlúine’ or woman of the knee (midwife, handywoman) was researched and developed by Emma Laffey, a volunteer with the Skehana & District Heritage Group and a valued team member working as a healthcare assistant in Portiuncula Maternity Unit.

Notice of road works and diversions at University Hospital Galway

In order to facilitate ongoing construction at University Hospital Galway a section of the through road in the hospital will be closed from 7pm this evening Thursday August 18 to 6am on Friday August 19.

Access to Emergency Department 

During this time vehicular access to the Emergency Department is as follows:

HSE encouraging the public to stay safe and help protect hospitals and emergency services over the August bank holiday weekend

As the August bank holiday approaches the HSE is encouraging the public to consider all care options before attending Emergency Departments (EDs) or calling 112/999 for an ambulance as we need to protect these services for those patients who need urgent and emergency care.

Information Event for Volunteers at Mayo University Hospital

Mayo University Hospital (MUH) is hosting an information event for patients and members of the public who are interested in volunteering at hospital.

The event will take place on Wednesday 20 July at 7pm in the Lecture Hall in MUH.

COVID-19 outbreaks and advice for visitors to Sligo University Hospital

Sligo University Hospital continues to be severely impacted by COVID-19. As of 8pm Monday night there were 29 patients with COVID-19 being treated in the hospital and three medical wards in the hospital are currently affected by COVID-19 outbreaks with a further two wards are being used as Covid wards.

Galway University Hospitals mark Research and Awards Day

Staff from Galway University Hospitals gathered together to showcase their academic achievements in research and innovation during the hospitals research and awards day.

The event included over 120 submissions from staff across all disciplines, including doctors, HSCPs, nursing, midwifery and QI.

Mayo University Hospital under increasing pressure due to COVID-19 outbreaks and high Emergency Department attendances

Mayo University Hospital is dealing with a significant increase in COVID-19 positive patients, while also seeing very high numbers of attendances through the Emergency Department.

In addition to the ED pressures, the hospital is treating over 40 patients with COVID-19 and the high community transmission rate in the region is having an impact on staffing levels. 

New state-of-the-art Cardiothoracic ward opens at University Hospital Galway

A new Cardiothoracic ward has opened at University Hospital Galway. The 13 bedded state-of-the-art ward is dedicated to cardiothoracic surgery.

The ward is built to the highest standard and accommodates three  isolation rooms, 3 two-bedded wards and a four-bedded ward depending on the needs of the patients.
