New Wellness Walkway at Mayo University Hospital

A new Wellness Walkway at Mayo University Hospital was officially launched last week by Prof Brian Dolan OBE.

The walkway, which is located on the first floor of the hospital, aims to promote the health and wellbeing of patients during their recovery from illness and injury. The walkway is 130m long with exercise stations and seated areas to allow patients get away from the busy ward environment.

New Patient Advocacy and Liaison Service Coordinator for Roscommon University Hospital

Roscommon University Hospital is delighted to announce the appointment of Christine Rohan to the role of Patient Advocacy and Liaison Service (PALS) Coordinator.  

The Patient Advice and Liaison Service Co-ordinator acts as the main contact between patients, their families, carers and the hospital. They ensure that the patient voice is heard either through the patient directly or through a nominated representative.

Minister for Health Officially Opens Cardiothoracic Ward at University Hospital Galway

University Hospital Galway welcomed Minister for Health, Stephen Donnelly TD to the hospital today, Friday 21 October, to meet with frontline staff and get an update on recent hospital developments.

Inflammatory Bowel Disease Information Evening for Patients in Donegal

Staff from the Gastroenterology Department at Letterkenny University Hospital are organising a free information evening for patients with Inflammatory Bowel Disease, their families and carers, on Thursday 20 October from 7pm to 8pm in the Radisson Hotel, Letterkenny.

Cathy Walsh, Advanced Nurse Practitioner said, “There are approximately 60,000 people diagnosed with Inflammatory Bowel Disease in Ireland and around 2,000 of these patients live in County Donegal.

Staff from the Maternity Department at University Hospital Galway are organising a ceremony to mark International Pregnancy and Infant Loss Remembrance Day on Saturday 15 October at 6pm in the hospital canteen.

Free flu vaccine now available for at-risk groups and healthcare workers

The HSE’s winter vaccination gets underway with the roll out of the free flu vaccine to recommended groups.

Paul Hooton, Chief Director of Nursing and Midwifery at the Saolta Hospital Group, which includes Galway University Hospitals and Portiuncula University Hospitals said, “Based on the experience in Australia where there was an early surge of flu cases, we need to prepare for a more serious flu season compared with the past couple of years.

The Rose Room for bereaved families officially opens in the Maternity Department of Mayo University Hospital

Mayo University Hospital (MUH) has officially opened a designated room in the Maternity Unit for bereaved families. The Rose Room is named in memory of baby Hope Rose Caulfield who sadly died in 2017 aged 9 days old. Hope Rose’s parents Sandra and Jonathan Caulfield from Kiltimagh have fundraised significantly for the renovation of this space which will support the hospital in providing comfort and solace to families dealing with loss.

Relocation of Emergency Department at University Hospital Galway

The Emergency Department at UHG is moving to a new location at the front of the hospital over the coming weekend. On Saturday 08 and Sunday 09 October the service and staff will relocate to a temporary Emergency Department at the front of the hospital.

This will result in some disruption for patients and the hospital would like to apologise in advance for the additional delays which will be experienced by patients and their families during the move.

Well Baby Breastfeeding Clinic in Galway City

The Well Baby Breastfeeding Clinic at Shantalla Health Centre was established late 2021 as a joint initiative of the Department of Neonatology in University Hospital Galway and the Galway Public Health Nursing Department. The clinic is governed by Dr Ethel Ryan, Consultant Neonatologist and Helen Martin, Director of Public Health Nursing, Galway Primary Care.

Portiuncula University Hospital Offers Advice and Support for National Breastfeeding Week

National Breastfeeding Week runs from 01-07 October and it’s a great opportunity to promote the importance of breastfeeding and the many positive health benefits it provides for both mother and baby. It’s also an opportunity to provide information on breastfeeding supports and to let parents and parents-to-be know where they can access this information and support.
