World Stroke Day at Letterkenny University Hospital

Letterkenny University Hospital together with the Donegal Stroke Support Groups hosted a very successful stroke prevention information stand in Letterkenny Shopping centre to mark World Stroke Day on Tuesday 29 October.

Information was provided on stroke prevention; FAST ‘Time is Brain’; smoking cessation; blood pressure checks; dietary and lifestyle advice.

Cavan Family’s Donation to the Coronary Care Unit at University Hospital Galway

The family of Mrs Mae Reilly from Finea in County Cavan donated a cheque for €800 to the Coronary Care Unit at University Hospital Galway in recognition of the care and respect shown to their mother Mae during her stay in UHG earlier this year. Also, as Mae was transported by helicopter to UHG, the family donated a cheque for €700 to the Community Rapid Response Unit in Cork.

‘The Future of Medicine’ Grand Rounds

In a change of date, University Hospital Galway’s Grand Rounds will take place tomorrow, Thursday 31 October at 1pm in the Clinical Science Institute (Large Lecture Theatre).

The Grand Rounds lecture entitled ‘The Future of Medicine’ will be delivered by Prof John Rogers, Northwestern University, USA.

Official Opening of the Croí Family Room in the Coronary Care Unit at University Hospital Galway

Croí, the Heart and Stroke Charity, recently funded the furnishing and redesign of a new family room for the Coronary Care Unit at University Hospital Galway. The Coronary Care Unit is a specialist unit for patients recovering after an acute heart attack or with other serious heart conditions. It is the primary heart unit for the Saolta Hospital Group and patients from all parts of the West and North West of the country are cared for there.

New Consultant Surgeon appointed to Galway University Hospitals

Mr Paul Carroll, Consultant Oesophagogastric and General Surgeon has recently been appointed to Galway University Hospitals (GUH).

Of the new appointment, General Manager of GUH, Ms Chris Kane said, “We are delighted to welcome Mr Carroll to Galway where his expertise in the latest surgical techniques will help us to continue to deliver high quality care and services to our patients as one of the largest teaching hospitals in the country.”

Letterkenny University Hospital leading Emergency Surgery Research

As part of the Centre for Personalised Medicine, Letterkenny University Hospital (LUH) is working with Altnagelvin Hospital, Ulster University and Letterkenny Institute of Technology to improve the treatment and care of patients requiring emergency surgery.

University Hospital Galway to take part in the Big Switch Off this Weekend!

Over the October bank holiday weekend, University Hospital Galway will participate in the ‘Big Switch Off’ competition organised by the Office of Public Works (OPW) in partnership with HSE Estates.

The aim is to change the approach to energy usage and conserve as much electrical and thermal energy as possible in the hospital during the bank holiday weekend and demonstrate the cumulative impact of small individual actions across the workplace.
