Portiuncula University Hospital welcomes positive results from the National Maternity Experience Survey 2025
Portiuncula University Hospital (PUH) welcomes the National Maternity Experience Survey 2025 findings, which reports on the positive maternity care experienced by women earlier this year. The hospital acknowledges the value of this feedback and is using the results to drive ongoing quality improvements in maternity care.
The 2025 report was published by the National Care Experience Programme this week, read the 2025 National Maternity Experience Reports
The survey invited women who gave birth in February and March 2025 to share their experiences of antenatal, labour, birth and postnatal care. In total, 202 women who gave birth at PUH during this time were invited to take part and with 99 participants responding, this reflected a response rate of 49% which was higher than the national average of 42%.
84% of participants who gave birth at Portiuncula University Hospital said they had a good or very good overall experience. This result was higher than the national average of 83%.
Areas of good experience at Portiuncula University Hospital included communication about care in pregnancy between the maternity service and GPs, having a healthcare professional to talk to about worries and fears in pregnancy, and emotional support from healthcare professionals when the baby is in the neonatal unit.
Among the positive feedback received, one mother praised the service saying, “The doctors and midwives were diligent with my care prior to birth and involved me with all decision making. Clearly explaining my options and the benefit/risk of each.”
While another mother said, “Each midwife, doctor or consultant I encountered took their time to listen to me and done everything they could to help me when my blood pressure was rising due to anxiousness and worry.”
Commenting on the results of the Maternity Survey, Deirdre Naughton, Portiuncula University Hospital Director of Midwifery said, “We are very pleased to see such positive feedback in the National Maternity Experience Survey 2025. The strong results reflect the commitment, compassion and professionalism shown every day by our midwives and the wider maternity team. We are especially encouraged by the women’s experiences of communication, emotional support and involvement in decision making. At the same time, we value all feedback and will continue to use these insights to enhance the quality and safety of the care we provide for women, babies and families.”
James Keane, Portiuncula University Hospital manager said, “I welcome the survey findings and am proud that 84% of women who gave birth at Portiuncula University Hospital rated their overall experience as good or very good which was above the national average. This is a testament to the dedication of our staff and the high standards of care they deliver. Listening to the women’s experiences is essential, and we remain committed to the continuous improvement so that every family receives the safe, supportive and person centred maternity care they deserve.”
Dr. Mark Skehan, Consultant Obstetrician and External Clinical Director added “I am delighted to see that Portiuncula University Hospital performed so well in the National Maternity Experience Survey 2025. The results demonstrate the commitment of the team in PUH in delivering a high standard of care to women and babies.”
