New Radiation Oncology Centre at University Hospital Galway

Construction will shortly begin on a new three-storey radiation oncology centre at University Hospital Galway. The facility will include seven radiotherapy treatment vaults, a brachytherapy suite, two CT rooms, on-treatment support and ancillary physics, treatment planning and administration facilities.

UHG wins ‘BIG Switch Off’ Energy Saving Award

University Hospital Galway was named winner of the ‘BIG Switch Off’ competition for a staff awareness campaign during the month of October and the reduction of energy consumption over the October bank holiday weekend last year.

Visiting Restrictions in place at University Hospital Galway

Due to an increase in the number of patients with flu in University Hospital Galway (UHG), visiting restrictions are in place on St Nicholas’s Ward.

The public are asked not to visit St Nicholas’s Ward in an effort to prevent the spread of the flu in the hospital and protect the many very sick patients in the hospital.

Endocrinologist at Galway University Hospitals awarded inaugural St Luke’s Medal

Professor Derek O’Keeffe, Consultant Endocrinologist at Galway University Hospitals and Professor of Medical Device Technology at NUI Galway was presented with the inaugural St Luke’s medal by the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland (RCPI) at the annual St Luke’s Symposium recently.

Celebrating World Prematurity Day at University Hospital Galway

To celebrate World Prematurity Day 2019, the staff from the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at University Hospital Galway will be hosting an event in the main foyer of the hospital on Friday 15 November from 09.30am to 2pm.

Cavan Family’s Donation to the Coronary Care Unit at University Hospital Galway

The family of Mrs Mae Reilly from Finea in County Cavan donated a cheque for €800 to the Coronary Care Unit at University Hospital Galway in recognition of the care and respect shown to their mother Mae during her stay in UHG earlier this year. Also, as Mae was transported by helicopter to UHG, the family donated a cheque for €700 to the Community Rapid Response Unit in Cork.

‘The Future of Medicine’ Grand Rounds

In a change of date, University Hospital Galway’s Grand Rounds will take place tomorrow, Thursday 31 October at 1pm in the Clinical Science Institute (Large Lecture Theatre).

The Grand Rounds lecture entitled ‘The Future of Medicine’ will be delivered by Prof John Rogers, Northwestern University, USA.

Official Opening of the Croí Family Room in the Coronary Care Unit at University Hospital Galway

Croí, the Heart and Stroke Charity, recently funded the furnishing and redesign of a new family room for the Coronary Care Unit at University Hospital Galway. The Coronary Care Unit is a specialist unit for patients recovering after an acute heart attack or with other serious heart conditions. It is the primary heart unit for the Saolta Hospital Group and patients from all parts of the West and North West of the country are cared for there.

Maternity Department at UHG wins Irish Healthcare Centre Award

A team from the Maternity Department at University Hospital Galway won the Midwifery Led Project at the recent Irish Healthcare Centre Awards for their quality improvement project on preventing hypothermia in newborn babies admitted to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. This quality improvement project has resulted in a reduction in the number of babies who have to be admitted to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and an increase in breastfeeding rates by 9%.

University Hospital Galway to hold candle light ceremony to mark International Pregnancy and Infant Loss Remembrance Day

In recognition of International Pregnancy and Infant Loss Day, University Hospital Galway will hold a candle lighting memorial ceremony on Sunday 13 October at 3.30pm in the hospital canteen in the nurse’s home at University Hospital Galway (UHG).
